A Letter to Parents...
At the University of St. Thomas, we are
committed to helping students achieve in every endeavor. Quality
academics and competitive athletics are seen as an intergral part of a
students education.
St. Thomas is a Catholic, Liberal
Arts University located just off the Mississippi River in St. Paul.
Rated as one of the top fifteen regional colleges by U.S. News and
World Report it offers baccalaureate degrees in 48 areas of study as
well as opportunities for post-graduate work and advanced degrees in
fields of Education, Psychology and Business Administration. Our
beautiful campus combines the convenience and sense of community so
integral to a small college, yet has easy access to a diverse range of
the Twin Cities. With an enrollment of approximately 5000 students
class sizes are small, student involvement is high, and instructors
take a very active role in the educational experience. St. Thomas
location, its academic reputation, and the success of its students in
all walks of life provide the St. Thomas graduate with unique
opportunities for internships, work-study and employment.
As a coach, but more importantly as
an educator, I know and value the role of a school in providing
opportunities for a student to develop their full potential. I am
confident St. Thomas will challenge your son in the classroom and on
the track in such a way as to bring out his best. There is a tradition
of athletic excellence at St. Thomas, which I believe he would enjoy
being a part of. During the last 19 years, the track and field teams
at St. Thomas have won all but two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Championship. These teams have also had many strong
finishes at the NCAA Championships.
By now you are probably aware that
Division III schools such as St. Thomas are not allowed to provide
athletic scholarships. Although the cost of a college education can
certainly be daunting, nearly 80% of our students qualify for
financial aid. There are also various types of work-study available on
campus. The Financial Aid Office would be helpful in assessing
financial needs. The article linked
here may help inform you of just how affordable St. Thomas can be.
If I can be of any assistance,
answering questions, setting up visits, etc., please do not hesitate
to contact me.
Sincerely,
Coach Steve Mathre
